Katz's Delicatessen: "The Best Sandwich on Earth"
Their slogan preaches
truth. On a famished Sunday evening, QLL headed east on Houston to the corner of
Ludlow where Katz's
Delicatessen has sat since 1888. A door underneath the burning-out
fluorescent sign opens into a cavernous space filled with hearty deli food and
just a little bit of everyone.
College students fork
their way through round potato knishes. LES hipsters sip Dr. Brown Cel-Ray soda
and families with children plough their way through generous sandwiches heaping
with tasty meat. Table set up is reminiscent of a high school cafeteria. Wait
service is offered only at those tables snug against the wall. If you want your
food fast we recommend heading to the deli line. But if you are in no rush, the
waiters are true old timers, in a blue coats and plastic gloves.
A plate of homemade sour
pickles and pickled tomatoes started the meal. We ordered a Rueben
and a corned beef sandwich,
a round potato knish and a chocolate egg cream. As the sandwiches arrived, our
jaws dropped. Never before had we seen such massive, mouthwatering sandwiches.
Barely able to make it through half, we left laughing and satisfied, already
planning our next trip back.

Cel-Ray is disgusting! Have you actually tried it? I like celery and all, but that stuff is terrible. Go for a creme soda or egg cream.
